In Pursuit of the 13th Note
Rob Gallagher（現在、Two Banks Of Four）によるプロジェクトGallianoは、1987年Acid Jazzレーベルからのシングル「Frederick Lies Still」でデビューする。そのシングルは、Curtis Mayfieldの「Freddie's Dead」をPucho & the Latin Soul Brothersがカヴァーしたインストルメンタルに、Last Poets風のラップ（トースト）をのせたもの。その後、90年にGilles Petersonが立ち上げたTalkin' Loudレーベルの最初のアーティストとして契約。ファースト・アルバムである本作では、Roy Ayersや元The Style Councilメンバーの二人（Mick TalbotとSteve White）が参加、プロデュースはアシッド・ジャズの影の生みの親、Chris Bangs（Thin Air Productions）が手がけている。
当時のアシッド・ジャズはヒップホップによるジャズの再解釈という典型もあり、そのラップはタフでマッチョなものが多かった。その中にあって、Gallianoのポエトリー・リーディングはとても新鮮に聴こえた。たとえば、「Little Ghetto Boy」。しかし、アルバム収録に際して女声ヴォーカルがフィーチャーされるなど、聴きやすいようにアレンジされる（「Welcome To The Story」なども）。そう考えると、「ポピュラー」と「（懐古趣味的）新しさ」のバランスがアシッド・ジャズのキーとなっていたのだろう。少なくとも、英国白人がレトロスペクティヴに生み出した、この泥臭くも「いなたい」サウンドが予想以上の魅力を放っていたのだ。ちなみに邦盤では、18,19曲目が追加。
